The Current Political Climate in America

I remember when I was growing up partisanship was as strong as it is today. If someone came up with an idea that was good for the country, it didn’t matter which party he belonged to. He could get bipartisan support. These days it doesn’t matter if the idea is good for the country. If a Republican came up with it, the Democrats will oppose it because it isn’t their idea and the opposite is true. Our two party system is a mess and our founders predicted it would happen.

John Adams said:

There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.

George Washington agreed with Adams ans said this:

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind, (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight,) the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

We can see the “spirit of revenge” Washington spoke every time we see or read political news. And neither of the two major parties is better or worse than the other. Both practice revenge politics, forsaking the good of the country and espouses the good of the party. The number one priority of nearly every elected official is to get reelected. This seems to be especially true of the House of Representatives as they have to run every two years. They spend a year getting appointed to a committee and spend the next year campaigning.

It is time for this madness to come to an end. First, change the House term to 4 years, with elections held in even numbered years not in the same year as presidential elections. Second, institute term limits for all elected officials. The Founders never intended for Congress to be a career. Set the house at 3 terms, or twelve years total, and the Senate to 2 terms, or twelve years total. Term limits would put an end to the good ol’ boy network so prevalent in DC now. Congressional empires would be broken up and no one person could wield extreme power indefinitely.

Another measure would be to end the advantage the two major parties currently hold during elections. States have made it extremely difficult for other parties to become established. The Democrats and the Republicans are unwilling to relinquish the power they have held so long. This the fault of the people. It is we who have allowed this to happen. It is we who must put a stop to it.

We stop this by supporting candidates who are not affiliated with either of the major parties. The so-called experts argue that secondary parties dilute the ballot and pull votes from establishment candidates and this allows the opposition to win. Conservative Independent Candidate A pulls support from Republicans, Progressive Candidate B pulls votes from Democrats. They use this argument to convince you to support them because the “bad guys” will win. What would it be like if Candidate A took enough voted from the GOP candidate and the Democratic Candidate and WON? This can happen.

I invite conservatives to take a look at an alternative party – The Constitution Party. The CP is a group of people who believe in the Constitution as it was written. Click HERE to visit the CP website. You may be surprised at how much you have in common with the CP.

I am currently working to build a strong CP here in Arkansas. If you live in Arkansas I need your help. Those of you who live in other states need to contact the CP in your state. Together we can rebuild the America the Founders dreamed of. Together we can achieve Integrity, Liberty, and Prosperity. Go check it out. You have nothing to lose and plenty to gain.
